This exhibition, the first retrospective dedicated to Filippo Marignoli since 2004, marks the centenary of the artist’s birth. Curated by Peter Benson Miller, assisted by Gemma Fullone, the exhibition is composed of twenty-two carefully selected works marking distinct phases in his international career. Born in Spoleto, where his early work as a self-taught painter evolved in the company of a group of fellow artists, The Spoleto Six (I sei di Spoleto), Marignoli went on to live and work in Rome, New York, Honolulu and Paris. His itinerant, transatlantic career, while grounded initially in the Umbrian landscape, demonstrates the ways that Marignoli’s early style, a form of abstract painting, the Informale, developed and changed direction, responding to transnational encounters, new surroundings, and a variety of artistic stimuli. While the works from his Informale period in the 1950s appear in many ways very different from the so-called “Vertical Landscapes” from the 1970s, the exhibition traces the continuities between them, as Marignoli reformulated landscape from a realm of idiosyncratic, expressive painterly invention to one of analytical precision and semiotic inquiry.
