“Artisti che non si direbbon di primo seggio”. Extras (or protagonist?) of baroque sculpture between Florence and Rome

After the success of the successful two study days held in October 2022, intended as a moment of critical review of three important exhibitions focused mostly on the Roman Eighteenth century, the Marignoli di Montecorona Foundation, along with the Federico Zeri Foundation of Bologna, proposes a new event, a conference which will be held at Palazzo Collicola, in Spoleto on October 7 and 8, 2023. “Artisti che non si direbbon di primo  seggio”. Comprimari (o protagonisti?) della scultura barocca tra Firenze e Roma./Extras (or protagonists?) of Baroque sculpture between Florence and Rome. While conferences
and exhibition initiatives dedicated to personalities such as Bernini or Algardi are innumerable nowadays, here the idea is to face the study of Baroque sculpture in Rome and Florence by shedding light on what Luigi Lanzi would have called precisely “artists who are not said to be of ‘primo seggio’”, who were nevertheless able to create absolutely remarkable works and who turn out to be essential, in order to better focus on the extraordinary richness and complexity of the Baroque sculpture overview in central Italy. The scientific curators of these study days, Andrea Bacchi, Duccio K. Marignoli and Simonetta Prosperi Valenti Rodinò, intend to give voice to young scholars and scholars, some of them still in training, but who already have original and brilliant studies to their credit.
Hence it will emerge again how Baroque sculpture has long been a neglected subject of study, enabling today important discoveries as much in peripheral places as in some of the most prominent buildings in Rome.
